Therapies

THERAPIES

CBT

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is an evidence based approach recommended for depression and anxiety disorders. It explores the relationship between our thoughts, emotions, physical symptoms and behaviours.

For example, when we are struggling, we can get trapped in a vicious cycle of negative thoughts and unhelpful behaviours which affect how we feel physically and emotionally. CBT can help you make changes to one of these areas to help break the cycle and move forward.

I will help you focus on the present and provide coping strategies and tools to help you manage depression, anxiety or any other challenges you are experiencing. You can find out more about CBT from the BABCP.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) has been found to be helpful for anyone who has experienced psychological trauma. It is recommended for treatment of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and can also be effective in the treatment of other anxiety disorders.

Our brains automatically manage new information and store memories everyday. When we experience distressing events our brain's natural coping mechanism can be disturbed, causing the memory to be frozen or unprocessed. This can cause unwanted flashbacks, thoughts, nightmares and distress.

I will help you to process memories using eye movements, much like Random Eye Movement sleep (REM). This will help unblock the negative memory and reduce flashbacks, distressing thoughts or feelings related to the experience.

ACT

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of CBT therapy that helps you to make sense of the way you behave in response to distressing thoughts and feelings.

ACT differs from other types of therapeutic approaches, because rather than focusing on symptom reduction, it focuses on your values and taking meaningful actions to help you let go of your suffering and build a more fulfilling life.

I will help you to focus on behavioural processes rather than diagnosis or labelling your problems. This can help you effectively address a number of difficulties including chronic pain, depression, anxiety and stress.
